Classes are very popular at the Bosque. We welcome all of our visitors to engage in classes and activities. Guests occasionally come with a workshop or class of their own to share for other visitors – let us know before you arrive if there are any special materials you want to request.
Please note that this is not a comprehensive list of our activities, and does not include workshops with Centro Jobutsu. Any costs involved go directly to the teachers and families, not to Bosque Village.
Tortilla and Salsa
Location: Bosque Village

In most homes in the local villages, tortillas are made fresh daily and are served with every meal. Every village has a molino – a large grinder which grinds prepared corn into masa – corn dough. Learn about this process and how to make the masa into corn tortillas. Additionally, help prepare delicious roasted salsa using a traditional molcajete.
Clay
Location: Bosque Village Studio
Cost: free

Learn how to make clay using Bosque dirt. Form art with the clay and fire the pieces using a campfire.
Bread Baking
Location: La Zarzamora – a one hour walk from Bosque Village.
Cost: $150 pesos (includes lunch)
When: Mondays from 10:30am – 4:00pm
How: Reserve your place at bread class with Bosque staff. Please remind us if you are vegetarian so we can let Doña Licha know, as she serves a delicious lunch!
Every Monday in a nearby village, our visitors are welcomed by the family of Doña Licha and Don Mariano to join them to learn how to bake traditional Mexican bread in an adobe and brick wood-fired oven. Learn to knead dough and prepare loaves of bolillos, pan dulce, and more.
Plant Propagation

Plant propagation class is an hour long workshop that discusses and demonstrates a variety of ways to reproduce plants. Topics include propagation by cuttings, graftings, seeds, and air layering.
Wood Carving
Location: Bosque – meet Beto near the Bodega
Cost: free or $50 pesos (minimum of 2 students)

Carving class gives students a chance to create and carve a design of their choice. We normally use pine wood, though oak and madrone are also available. Beto is a patient and friendly teacher.
Pine Needle Basket Weaving: Huinumo class
Location: Bosque terraza
Cost: $50 pesos (minimum of 3 students)

How: Let Bosque staff know ASAP if you are interested in this class. Socorro, the teacher, is busy and we try to work around her schedule.
In basket weaving class students learn how to weave baskets out of pine needles, or huinumo in the local Purepecha language. Socorro (Soco) learned how to weave pine needle baskets a few years ago from a woman’s collective in a town called Opopeo. Since then she has developed her skills and makes many different types of baskets. Students are given some nylon thread and a needle so that they can continue their project if they cannot complete it during the class.
Paper making

Learn how to make sheets of paper from recycled material. Students are welcome to keep the paper they make.
Metal work
Location: Eronga
Cost: $500-600 pesos MXN

Javier is a local metal worker, originally from Mexico City. He teaches a two day workshop in which students learn how to make a knife, including the blade made from scrap metal, a handle, and a sheath. Students leave the class with the knife they created, as well as with practical knowledge about metal work. Vegetarian lunches are included.
Bookbinding

Learn how to bind books using recycled materials. Students are welcome to keep the book they make.
Natural Building Class
Location: Bosque
Cost: free
When: on demand

Construct small huts, benches, shrines, and more out of cob and adobe. Natural materials make great medium for creating long-lasting, artful buildings.
