Climate

The climate in the Mexican highlands is pleasant, if you are prepared.

  • The sun is very strong due to the 2,400 meters (7,800 ft) elevation. Good straw hats are available locally for less than 50 pesos (USD $5).
  • The nights are chilly so warm clothing and hat are needed.
  • During the June to October rainy season rain gear is needed. June to September are especially rainy. The rain does not last all day. Usually it comes in the form of a strong downpour for an hour or two in the afternoon. Nights can have lighting and thunderstorms and torrential rains.
  • May is the warmest month since the days are longer but the rains have not yet started.
  • December, January and February are the coldest months, but every day is sunny!
  • For agriculture, the climate is wonderful because the plants have the rain in the summer when they need it. In the winter then they are dormant it is dry, so the cold nighttime temperatures don’t bother them so much. And for people, the winter isn’t wet, so it is feels less chilly. And in the summer when it would otherwise be too hot, the clouds move in to shelter from the summer sun.
