This year we’ve planted lots of vegetables in small containers to get them started before the rains come. Many are almost ready to transplant into the gardens. Planting this way means that we get a head start on our first round of vegetables. We did have to water them a bit, which is hard to do when it is so dry. We were lucky this year that we had just a bit of water left to do some needed repairs with concrete and water our vegetable plants.
The rains here occasionally come down so hard that seedlings can be crushed. These small plants will have a much higher likelihood of survival in the harsh rainy conditions. We’re using some old styrofoam growing trays and reusing egg cartons to plant the starts.
Some of the seedlings are squash, chard, broccoli, and cauliflower.
